WHO WE ARE
We are a coalition of impacted home, land & business owners and concerned residents and allies. We believe the City of Ocean Springs' proposed Urban Renewal Plan unfairly targets the historic Black neighborhood, the L&N Railroad Historic District, and other properties owned by working-class folks in Ocean Springs for acquisition by the City for the benefit of private developers. Many of the targeted families in the L&N Railraid District span five or more generations in their homes and include the Carter-Calloway House listed on the National Historic Register. There is a long history of attempted land acquisition from exploitative developers in the historically Black Railroad District dating back to the early 1900's when Black residents were forced off their land during segregation. The City red-lined and forced all Black residents to live south of the railroad tracks. Many were forced to sell their property north of the tracks or rent it to white residents. The proposed URP also targets businesses in other areas of the City that have long been owned and operated by hard-working families in Ocean Springs.
We believe that Mayor Kenny Holloway and the Board of Aldermen of the City of Ocean Springs are knowingly & deliberately attempting to use vague blight laws to justify taking homes, businesses and properties from Black and working-class residents of Ocean Springs for the benefit of private developers. We have no other choice than to organize and fight. We need your help to stop them!
OUR MISSION
We will ensure homes, land & businesses of all residents and families in Ocean Springs are permanently protected from theft by the City government through eminent domain and other unfair practices. We will ensure all residents of Ocean Springs have a voice in the City's economic and social development plans. We will ensure the City operates with full transparency and accountability to the residents of Ocean Springs.
